It wasn’t long ago that going to the doctor for back pain resulted in a prescription for anti-inflammatory medication and a few days of bed rest. Today, with the popularity of complimentary forms of treatment, those suffering from chronic musculoskeletal conditions reach out to find more active forms of recovery. It has now become mainstream knowledge that modern medicine supports getting back to regular activity and exercise sooner, for better and more lasting results. Yoga has come onto the healthcare scene bringing with it huge benefits.
Yoga is defined as the practice of physical postures or poses. It involves slow-paced movements structured to stretch and strengthen the body while utilizing controlled breathing techniques. Elongation and increased motion of muscles and joints through yoga poses is beneficial because it allows the body to increase overall flexibility and promotes functional integrity. This is achieved through active movements, which aid the body by promoting improved circulation to the tissues involved. Increased blood flow delivers crucial nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and joints, allowing the body to heal itself more efficiently and fight chronic injury.
Until recent years, peer reviewed journals have not tackled the subject of yoga and pain relief. But, a 2005 study researched 101 adults experiencing chronic low back pain and had them participate in either a structured yoga program or were given a self-care booklet. The results were significant and identified that, “Yoga was more effective than a self-care book for improving function and reducing chronic low back pain, and the benefits persisted for at least several months.” This study indicates the benefits of yoga for treatment of chronic pain and prolonged relief measures. Many other studies have been performed portraying the health benefits of yoga. Now, it’s time to see the difference yoga can make to your well-being for yourself!

Even with the positive benefits of yoga listed above, this is an activity that is best suited for chronic conditions like prolonged low back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Acute conditions like muscle strains, whiplash, and recent-onset back pain should be addressed by a physician prior to undertaking a yoga class. Before beginning a yoga program at our clinic, you will consult with one of Green Health Acupuncture’s doctors who will assess your condition and tell you if yoga is right for you. Our instructors provide simple individual and group instruction catering to the needs of each patient and their condition.
All yoga skill levels are welcome! Even if you have never done yoga before, we will give you guided instructions and assessment so you can experience the benefits of yoga for yourself. And, for the veteran yogis out there, our experienced instructors can also provide a program to meet your needs and goals. Our main goals are to aid in pain relief, provide relaxation, and increase your flexibility, all while having fun in the process!
